Tom, have you played with a slide? Every now and then I use a copper tube or a pvc tube that I bought for a couple dollars total at the hardware store. Tune your guitar to DGDGBD (low to high)--open G--and away you go. If you like Keith Richards, it's easy to play Rolling Stones-like chords and riffs, but that tuning will allow all sorts of interesting sound-making, and with one finger you can play chords up and down the neck.
