My laptop's fried.  And, while I usually like fried things, this isn't good.  Really don't need the expense and hassle right now.

My belated birthday present from B. arrived in today's mail:  a silver guitar pick which has my name engraved upon it.  Very cool and a total surprise.  It makes a lovely sound as I rake it against the strings.

Did I mention that my laptop's fried?  The computer on which my manuscripts, etc reside.

Though I mostly practice on the acoustic guitar, I've been spending more time with the Strat lately. I bought the instrument a little over a year ago and am developing a deeper appreciation for the thing.  I even like the humbuckling.  And don't get me started on my wang bar.

  1. Oh no, so sorry about your laptop! I am assuming you will take it in somewhere and be able to retrieve everything, right?

The strat is a great instrument, I think. I got Jake one of the better ones (I guess they're better or worse, depending on where they're made?). He's gone through phrases of liking his hollow body better, and for slide he likes the most beat up old acoustic he can find, but the strat has been a very good instrument, holds its own really well. You may think this is heresy, but he also has a really cool pedal so that he can create loops and play on top of them, which is really fun. I always encourage him to use his father's old fender tube amp, which has a lovely full sound. Speaking of sound, I must sound like an overbearing mother, but I'm actually very good at keeping my opinions low key and not interfering with his music -- worse thing a parent can do to a kid is stick his or her nose into his or her art.

Retrieve the work on your fried computer soon, Tom! Good luck to you.

  2. Pedals are cool. Jack White uses one on his latest cd. It's effect is to reverse the sounds being played. Crazy beautiful.

I may just let everything on my laptop go.
