I like my guitar.  It's pretty. And I can make interesting random sounds with it.  But I'm thinking right now that I have big and clumsy, graceless hands.  I would like to be graceful.  I would like for there to be something beautiful about me.

And musical notation is like Chinese.  A nice enough language, I'm sure.  But I can't freaking read it.

  1. Tom, when I played guitar I thought big hands would be a blessing. Most guitar players with big hands have an easier time of it in the long run. Same with piano players. There were lots of things that I couldn't do because my hands weren't big enough to reach far enough along the fretboard. As for clumsy and graceless, that will change with practice. All musicians are born clumsy on the instrument. My brother, who has played guitar all his life, once went thru a phase where he just watched hands of players, The ones he loved were the ones that barely moved. So it'll come. Just like reading music. A few hours a day for the next 10 years should do it.

  2. Thanks, John. I really needed to hear that. Now move, fingers, move!
